Important Lessons for Art Collectors

The Steins Collect at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
by @schulmanArt

Stein was a personal friend of Picasso

Lesson #1 from Gertrude, in her own words to Ernest Hemingway: “Buy the people of your own age. There are always good new serious painters.”

The steins collected this artwork from the Fauvist first exhibition.

Lesson #2 from Leo Stein: A limited budget is an excuse to be creative.

A highlight of the exhibition is this self portrait of Matisse

Lesson #3 from Sarah and Michael Stein: Treat the artists you love like family.

Lesson #4 Art is a means to be social. The Steins introduced Matisse to Picasso, and these artists to the world. The threw art parties and teas.
This painting by Matisse did not appear in the exhibit but appeared in a photograph of the Steins’ apartment so was once part of their collection.

The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso and the Parisian Avant-Garde” continues through June 3 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; (212) 535-7710, metmuseum.org.

What do you like to collect?

  1. I love original art from unknown yet to be discovered artists. You have some wonderful quotes/lessons in this post! I must add that I also love to collect tea (as does previous commenter).
