Color Obsession: Sand

An update to a classic Neutral by @schulmanArt, Miriam Schulman

pantone sand 2014 spring color
The color Sand is one of the top picks for Spring 2014 according to Pantone
Ever since I became aware of Pantone color forecasting, I have looked forward to their color reports. I may not be able to afford every trend on the runway or a Chanel bag, but certainly a t-shirt in this year’s color of the year and nail polish in a few shades are within my budget. In addition to understanding color trends in fashion, I enjoy the report because it signals to me the colors that people are using to decorate their homes and how my artwork will fit in with their decorating schemes.
Last week, I blogged about Pantone’s Color of the year, Radiant Orchid {read} , which is a vivid shade of purple. For those not brave enough to dress in purple from head to tow, or even sport a purple purse or nail polish, you may consider an update of this classic neutral. The color sand is a warm version of beige. Much warmer than taupe or grey we have seen. Sand, a lightly toasted and amiable neutral, conjures images of the beach and the carefree days of summer. Try pairing Sand with mint green for perfect, natural balance.
For those looking to update your homes, you can’t go wrong by painting your walls in a modern shade of beige. { you may also like What color beige should I paint my walls? } Designer and decorator Susan Zises Green picks Benjamin Moore’s Chilled Chardonnay and says: “Just like a luscious glass of its namesake, CHILLED CHARDONNAY has broad appeal. It’s relaxing and refreshing. Think of that clear, crisp sparkle. I could use a glass right now! This is a tawny beige — great for showcasing other colors. It would look very smart with gray flannel, blue-and-white chintz, or shocking pink chenille. A great no-stress color to use throughout the house.”

I love to paint with vivid colors that make me happy, but I do also love my watercolor painting of this happy camel. The pops of color are in his red blanket and in the background.

What about you, how would you like to try out the color “sand”? Does it inspire a new purchase, or recycle an old one?
