When I take time to art journal
In 2013, I could never have imagined myself art journaling and now I can’t imagine not doing it. Whether using markers or gel pens in a waiting room or pasting down collage pieces while keeping my son company while he does his homework. (Who am I kidding? I am not keeping him company– I am sitting on him to make sure he does it and doesn’t get distracted by electronics) keeping an art journal is now one of my favorite pastimes.
Adding quotes
I started these two pages while he did his homework. I was so in love with the background I didn’t want to move forward and put any writing on top. Usually, I do traditional journal writing over my background and then “hide” the writing by adding bubble text. For this page, I really wanted to see the text so I decided to add mixed media mantras and I used rub-ons. You can see some of my inspirational art on etsy
What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
For the first “quote” I put a question posed by minister Robert H. Schuller: “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” I had also seen this question posed by bloggers. The idea is to think about what you should be doing but may be held back by fear. I consider myself fairly fearless. Partly the result of stubbornly working hard to not just “make it” but make it big as an artist. I make art that may or may not get sold. I write blog posts that may or may not get read.
Success is about trying even if you know you may fail (tweet this)
Part of what I do that I think makes me successful is that I try many things that may fail but then I do succeed in others. Many successful people are willing to try things that they know may or may not succeed. Last year I decided I wanted to teach online art classes, which I think was the most successful project of last year ( and continues to be~ you can check out my art classes at The Inspiration Place) I don’t worry about failing. I just do it. (Yes, not everything works out but I don’t know until I try)

And even if I do fail I've learned something! You're getting me into this idea now!
my philosophy is not that I think I won't fail– but I try regardless of the possibility. Failure is a natural part of success!
I need to learn from your fearlessness re my creative business. I did pluck up the courage this week to ask a blogger to do a giveaway of some of my stuff. She said no, but she said it so nicely that it wasn't too bad. I need to move on and ask someone else now. Thanks for giving me another push in the right direction. If I knew I couldn't fail, I'd have the tenacity of Miriam Schulman!
Your art journals are soooo beautiful!
I love what you said: "Part of what I do that I think makes me successful is that I try many things that may fail but then I do succeed in others."
Great post Miriam! I do not really keep a journal but I love altered art journals! Yours looks beautiful! I liked learning a little bit about the copyright laws as they apply to art journals too!
